Tip
#14 is easy and very often overlooked. Air conditioning registers, or
vents, into the various rooms in the house, often become dirty, dingy
and soiled over time. Most of this is just dust that has slipped by the
filter and collected on the outside of the register, but occasionally,
it is also mold, mildew and/or dust mite residue. All of these are
airborne contaminants that can cause various respiratory illnesses,
some quite serious. These registers need to be cleaned.

Cleaning registers can be a challenge, depending upon where they are
located and how
dirty they are. Make sure you wear a respiration mask over your nose
and mouth, to keep out any harmful irritants. If you have allergies,
asthma or any other kind of respiratory illness, it would be better to
let someone else do
this for you.
If they are really dirty, you may want
to remove
them and clean them. If you do, be sure not to damage the sheet rock
the screws are imbedded in when taking them down. Putting the registers
back up can be an even bigger challenge if
the builder has used the sheetrock alone to
hold the screws.
